America's war for independence was being stifled by King George III's mighty British forces. After losing recent battles, a bold, daring move was now required to continue the effort. On Christmas Evening 1776, Washington launched his men from the Pennsylvania shores of the Delaware River and made his way north to Trenton. As he and his men carefully and silently crossed the ice laden waters, it began to sleet.  This further delayed their planned surprise attack of Britain's unaware Hessian mercenaries.
